A total of RM140 million was allocated by the Government to implement these initiatives. To date, the PENJANA MSMEs E-commerce Campaign has onboarded over 30,000 new MSMEs onto the e-commerce bandwagon and through the PENJANA Shop Malaysia Online, more than RM400 million in sales has been generated by local retailers and traders via various e-commerce platforms. Devised to spur Malaysia's economic recovery by helping local MSMEs to become digitally-powered businesses and stimulating local online consumption, both initiatives will run until 30 September 2020.

As the PENJANA MSMEs E-commerce Campaign enters its final leg, it has benefited over 90,000 new and existing MSMEs through onboarding training, seller subsidy and sales support via 20 participating e-commerce platforms. These trends place Boost in a strong position to bring merchants and users together on one platform by leveraging an ecosystem that fulfils their business and lifestyle needs in a sustainable manner.

In demonstrating the spirit of Malaysia, the rakyat has taken it upon themselves to support each other, showing strength through unity and reinforcing the importance of rebuilding the economy together. From shopping at online Ramadan bazaars to mom and pop shops, the country continues to benefit from the rakyat producing and spending within our borders as much of the world remains in a state of lockdown.

This is apparent in Boost’s total monthly Gross Transaction Value (GTV) showing a strong 70% increase after the MCO period. Collectively, Malaysian businesses and consumers have the power to impact the economy positively and Malaysians understand this. According to our data, Boost merchants from the small and micro business segment performed better at maintaining earnings during the downturn compared to larger enterprises. This shows that Malaysians are aware of the impact of their purchasing power and naturally shifted towards supporting MSMEs by shopping and dining locally, and still continue to do so. This is why I am proud to be Malaysian. We know when to come together to uplift one another and times like these is when our strengths shine through,” said Mohd Khairil Abdullah, CEO of Boost.

Khairil also noted that, in the CMCO period, where business activity was partially opened, total user spend with Boost continued to pick back up to pre-MCO levels, even higher than the spending during the e-Tunai Rakyat period.

During this time, many homegrown businesses, including MSMEs in the F&B, services and retail sector, took the opportunity to digitally transform their businesses for long term resilience.

“I like how more local businesses, especially food stalls and grocery shops near my home, are now accepting cashless payments such as e-wallets. This means I don’t have to leave my neighbourhood which is safer as I don’t have to travel far or find myself in a crowded place. Johnny Chou, Founder, Chairman and CEO of BEST Inc., said, "We are excited to develop our logistics networks in Southeast Asia, a key focus area of our global strategy. The outbreak of COVID-19 accelerated and amplified consumers' reliance on e-commerce and created even larger potential opportunities in the region.
With the recent extension of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) to June, social distancing and good hygiene practices are still important, with many choosing to purchase their necessities from the comfort of their own homes instead of stepping outside.

Realising this need, Sunway Pyramid has set up the Sunway Pyramid online store where customers can purchase from over 100 of their favourite brands that range from various categories such as beauty, fashion, home décor, healthcare, footwear, food & beverage and digital lifestyle.

In addition to the special online store campaign, Sunway Pyramid will also host a 72-hour flash sale on the website from 29 May - 1 June. Customers can purchase from participating retailers such as Ippudo Ramen, Getha, up to 50% discount on Bonia products as well as further offers from Gintell, Brooks, Laura Mercier and more.

Selected retailers will also be hosting 'live' video sessions on Sunway Pyramid's Facebook page to promote their products and engage with their customers. Customers can also look forward to a variety of fun viewings such as a potting and care demonstration for succulent plants by Fleurs at Marrakesh and a DIY healthy bowl session by Salad Atelier.

Customers can also redeem a RM10 off promotional code for purchases on the online store, which can be found on Sunway Pyramid's mobile app.

As an added bonus, shoppers who spend RM200 on the online store will be eligible to redeem exclusive cash vouchers and metal straws. The online store was set up in partnership with homegrown e-commerce and delivery service provider MatDespatch in effort to aid small local businesses.

Kevin Tan, Chief Operating Officer of Sunway Malls, explains that the move for an online platform is the group's newest endeavour towards digital transformation to provide shoppers with added convenience and help bolster retailers' businesses.

"The past two months have definitely been a challenging period for us all, and we wanted to give our retailers the opportunity to reach their customers within a few clicks. Not all retailers have the capability to establish an online presence and so, we hope this will help strengthen their business operations for greater survivability post-MCO," said Tan.

He added, "To this end, Sunway Malls has also put in a lot of effort in strengthening our new motto of Your Safe Space, Our Safe Space to provide everybody who walks through our doors a safe and secure experience for peace of mind."

Strict safety measures and 'Order & Collect' system for peace of mind.

In line with the 'Your Safe Space, Our Safe Space' motto, Sunway Pyramid, along with the rest of the Sunway Malls have put in place 82 measures to keep both shoppers and retailers safe. This includes enhanced screenings and safety checks, heightened social distancing, holistic education and training for all staff and intensified hygiene efforts.

Sunway Pyramid will also be implementing the usage of the SELangkah initiative to keep shoppers safe. Before entering the mall, shoppers simply have to scan the QR code provided, register their name and contact number and they can shop with ease.

All frequent touchpoints are sanitised regularly, and thermal scanners are also placed at the mall's entrance to screen all entering the mall, with those exhibiting any symptoms encouraged to visit the nearest medical centre.

For customers who prefer to keep their contact at the bare minimum, they can make full use of Sunway Pyramid's 'Order & Collect' system. They simply have to call their favourite participating vendors to make their orders, arrange their pickup point, and collect it without having to enter the mall. Customers can choose from outlets such as KyoChon 1991, AEON Supermarket, The Loaf, Simple Life Vegetarian and many more. Check here for the full list of participating retailers.

Additional Offers for the Raya Festivities.

For even more cheer this period, shoppers will also be given exclusive discounts, promotions and interactive content to celebrate the festivities during Sunway Pyramid's Hari Raya campaign.

From now until 7 June, Sunway Pyramid has decorated both the Blue and Orange Concourses at LG2, which includes nostalgic kampung-themed elements. During the Raya campaign, shoppers who spend a minimum of RM200 in a minimum of two (2) receipts will be eligible to redeem goodies such as exclusive cash vouchers, metal straws and complimentary parking.

During this period, Sunway Pyramid is also doing its part by bringing cheer to the needy. To date, the mall has provided groceries to orphanages and will continue to do so to ensure more communities are reached out to in the spirit of giving.
This directive has brought about a new normal even in the world of retailing that according to Shopee, is here to stay. With consumers fully embracing e-commerce, businesses across industries are seen to be pushing boundaries and accelerating their digital presence.

Shifting consumer preferences

Shopee has observed new shopping preferences among Malaysian consumers as e-commerce becomes more important in their everyday lives. Consumers are spending an average of 20% more time on Shopee a week, reflecting an increasing reliance on e-commerce, which provides users one-stop access to everything, including entertainment. Groceries and Pets, Gaming and Consoles, and Home Appliances are highly sought after by consumers as they search for daily essentials, household necessities and games for the family to enjoy together at home. Brands and sellers have benefited from this increased demand, with those offering instant food and baking supplies recording 60 times more orders respectively than the same period last year.

In recent months, shopping activities on Mondays & Tuesdays have increased - showcasing the preference among Malaysians to shop earlier in the week. Shopee has also seen an increase in social interactions on its platform with over 3 million messages sent daily on average as consumers interact directly with brands and sellers to check on prices, stocks, delivery speed and more.

"2020 has changed the way we live, work, and shop online. As such, brands and sellers across the region are stepping up their digitalisation efforts, especially now, as e-commerce has taken on a greater role in people's lives seeing as more consumers are going online to fulfil their everyday needs. This has resulted in changes in the way businesses view and approach e-commerce as a viable trade channel," said Ian Ho, Regional Managing Director of Shopee.

Local businesses expand online presence

The current situation has also compelled businesses to explore new strategies to engage with consumers and continue facilitating trade. This has not only led to strong e-commerce adoption amongst local SMEs but has also unlocked new market segments for the e-commerce industry.

New potential: For instance, selling and buying fresh produce such as fish, chicken, beef and even durians on e-commerce platforms was almost non-existent just as recent as last year. However, in April alone, some 1,000 fresh and frozen sellers, including farmers and fishermen, started selling on Shopee. Shopee found that many of the sellers that offer a strong enough assortment of more than 20 types of products in their stores could generate monthly sales of up to RM100,000.

Personalising virtual connection: Shopee has also observed that the number of Shopee Live streams from brands and sellers have increased by 70 times since the virus outbreak as they look for a more personal approach to connect to consumers virtually. A new-to-Shopee seller, Deep Sea Fishery Kingdom sold RM1,200 worth of seafood in minutes during its first-ever live stream. Shopee expects the trend to sell and buy via live streaming will gain greater popularity as witnessed in countries like China.

Digital bazaars: The cancellation of Ramadan bazaars have affected the income of thousands of micro traders who depend on these bazaars to make a living. To help them sustain their incomes and livelihoods, several State Governments such as Selangor and Perak have commissioned Shopee to bring these sellers online to market products including Raya cookies and snacks, baju Raya and home decoration items via dedicated microsites. These initiatives include the Selangor E-Bazar Raya and Raya bersama PKNS, as well as the S.M.A.R.T Niaga@Perak.

Seizing opportunities: Additionally, the RM15 million Shopee Seller Support Package that provides support in funding, subsidies, education and marketing to boost sales, reduce operational costs and facilitate sustainable growth have seen to greatly benefit the business community. The Package has attracted the participation of more than 70,000 local businesses from micro, small, and medium to even large enterprises and corporations be it from the fast-moving consumer goods sector to fashion and apparel, electronics and more. This signals the swift response by the seller community to the available options that would help sustain their businesses. Contrary to the belief that all is bleak, these businesses are seen to be enjoying an uplift to their store's performance even during the MCO.

A factory manager in Seremban, Mohd Airin Ismie Ismail, 39, could not go to work due to the MCO and so, he decided to focus his attention on his online business on Shopee. On a daily basis, the father of two would quickly pack his orders at home before sending the parcels to all the delivery centres so they can be shipped out on time to his customers. He said, "The process of selling on Shopee is simple and straightforward enough that it was easy for me to go from selling on social media to selling on an e-commerce platform. I do not have a big capital so I am unable to have too many varieties of products as compared to many other established sellers and brands, but I took time to study what customers wanted and focused on ensuring I meet their needs. I also followed Shopee's updates closely to find new opportunities that would help me grow my business. To boost my sales and exposure, I have been promoting my store link in WhatsApp groups and social media. Sales so far have been encouraging. With more people turning to online to do their shopping, and with the help of the Seller Support Package, my sales have increased by over 60%." This is just in time for Airin and family as they prepare for Hari Raya.

For retail company Billion Group, the MCO has sped up its digitalisation efforts after witnessing a shift in consumers' shopping preference to online. This is as sales across its more than 50 outlets in the country saw a dip, particularly in the fashion category which saw orders plunge by 70%. Billion launched its first-ever online store on Shopee just two weeks back and has assigned a team dedicated to e-commerce trade as a mitigation effort to continue having a steady revenue stream. "As a newcomer, bringing our business online was not easy as we were faced with many challenges including logistics and customer service, but it helped that Shopee assigned an account manager to assist us in our digitization journey. We also made sure to sign up for the Shopee Seller Support Package in order to benefit from the vouchers, subsidies and free advertising credit. Our store on Shopee is performing well. It's just the beginning and we have already started recording four-digit daily sales. Right now, our focus will be on expanding our product offerings whilst focusing on pricing strategy to win the online crowd. We will not give up," said Tan He Kon, Group Operations Director of Billion Group.

Ho concluded, "Now that businesses are allowed to resume operations in batches, they ought more than ever to be agile, quick to recalibrate and diversify their trade channels to be in a more ready position in the future. We hope this sharing and insights will help businesses strategise better in the coming months. We remain steadfast in our commitment in working with the local community to overcome the current challenges before us. Meanwhile, we will continue to organise campaigns such as our Raya Bersama Shopee to the benefit of both sellers and consumers alike."
The new global norm of social-distancing has enveloped societies of the world right down to even the simple act of grocery shopping.

Malaysia's Movement Control Order (MCO) saw many resorting to online shopping for necessities since everyone had to stay at home. Coupled by limited business hours and long entry queues, a trip to the grocer's became more of an inconvenience.

Naturally, all and sundry in the retail world took a hit with the lockdown but at Bridzia, we look to helping our clients emerge as success stories in these hard times.

MYDIN - a household name in wholesale and retail - is one such case. In just ONE WEEK, Bridzia helped the firm gain overwhelming positive feedback from its customers with its "Drive-Thru" service via MYDIN Express.

The click and collect e-commerce site which Bridzia developed enabled its customers to shop online and pick-up their items at a store of their choice. It was a win-win for MYDIN, as well as customers, as it reduced the need to control shopping crowds, alleviated fear of the spread of the virus and there was no long waiting hours on the part of shoppers. All customers needed to do was pick the items they needed online, select a store to pick up from, and collect their items in just two to three hours, once they are ready.

MYDIN, which has 69 outlets nationwide and sells food, household items, electrical gadgets and textiles, also managed to increase its value to customers since the MCO was implemented.

There have been many positive feedbacks stemming from the "Drive-Thru" launch besides good feedback from MYDIN's customers. Express shopping is the new go-to for customers without having to spend hours in the store. The click and collect e-commerce site minimises risk of the spread of the virus and enables a shopping process from the get-go.

On the part of the store, lesser crowds increases the efficiency of MYDIN operations and reduces the risk of staff falling ill as well.

If we have piqued your curiosity and you are a retailer looking for a similar break-through, we can help you achieve this and allow your business to continue thriving even after the MCO is lifted.

Data presents that consumers will continue making online shopping their preferred channel so Bridzia assures you that this click and collect e-commerce site will still be useful as a long-term solution.

It won't take us long; only seven-steps to help you achieve results. Our aim is to understand your requirements and objectives. Leave it to us to plan the design and process flow of the site to optimise user experience, develop it and run tests to ensure the site is bug-free. You won't have to worry about training the users either, we will take care of that. Don't wait. Having to work, study and live at home and reduce social interactions, people are turning to technology for help to minimize disruptions in their everyday lives.

Contactless payment for one has become an essential part of everyday technology for shopping online, paying bills and ordering food. Furthermore, we are seeing the trend of contactless payment platforms fast evolving to deliver more innovative functionalities, fulfilling consumer needs such as payroll, entertainment, and even donations.

In Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, local users have even gathered donations through their e-wallets, raising more than US$600,000 (RM2,617,800) in contactless donations. These donations to charitable organizations enable vulnerable groups to immediately access the support they need, including food, masks and other protective equipment.

In India and Indonesia, there are nearly 50 million people who are even using e-wallets to access accurate and timely information about the pandemic.

E-wallets in South and Southeast Asia including Touch 'n Go eWallet in Malaysia, TrueMoney in Thailand, GCash in the Philippines, and bKash in Bangladesh, share their respective contactless innovations and the impact on local people during COVID-19.

Here are the contactless payment scenarios and use cases in South and Southeast Asia.

#1: Contactless Payment surging in popularity in the Philippines and Thailand

GCash in the Philippines

For a country where cash has been the dominant way of making payments, its usage during the nationwide lockdown in the Philippines was noticeably reduced. Locals turned to online and mobile wallet services for both convenience and safety. GCash, the leading mobile wallet in the Philippines has seen a surge in the number of downloads and ranked the most downloaded free app in the Finance category in Google Play Store.

Since March, the most used services in GCash wallet include Buy Load and Remittance, of which the total transaction volume has grown by more than 30%.

TrueMoney in Thailand

Thailand was among the firsts in Southeast Asia to introduce social distancing measures. Since March, the government has implemented a series of measures including postponing the Songkran holidays, recommending people to stay at home, and limiting business opening hours and telecommuting. Many businesses have been temporarily closed, except for supermarkets and F&B stores that are open only for take-away and delivery services.

In order to comply with such measures and reduce the risks of infection, TrueMoney has joined hands with merchants such as 7-Eleven, Makro, CP Freshmart, True Coffee, Chester's along with street stores and food stall sellers to promote contactless payment and hygiene awareness. TrueMoney's newly launched in-app feature "Shop Near Me" helps consumers to easily locate nearby stores and place order or request for delivery.

With the trend to adopt contactless payment during COVID-19, TrueMoney has seen its app download rate climbed by 20% over recent months.

#2: Contactless Rescue - e-wallets become lifeline for those in need

bKash in Bangladesh

As the COVID-19 outbreak continues, Bangladesh has tightened its social distancing enforcement and extended the nationwide lockdown. As a result, millions of workers who have been living on daily wages are now left jobless amid one of the worst global crisis.

Serving around 40 million users in Bangladesh, bKash, the largest mobile financial services provider in the country has been working closely with the government to facilitate the distribution of salary and government incentive to the workers. With most of the workers are without bank accounts, bKash as an integrated platform, is helping them to collect salaries through their mobile wallets. After receiving salary, the workers can Cash Out from any of the 230,000 bKash agent-points located across the country, or use cashless services like Send Money, Mobile Recharge, Payments, etc.

A garment worker named Shetu, aged 28, who lives in the remote corner of north-eastern Bangladesh shared that she used to receive salary on the fixed date of every month in her factory. However, since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Bangladesh, the factory has been closed and many workers were not paid last month as most of them do not have bank accounts. With the initiative taken by government to pay through mobile financial services providers like bKash, Shetu was able to receive her salary and escaped starvation for her family of five. She adds, "Thanks to the authority as well as bKash for making a way for me to get my salary without being physically present at the factory. This service has been a lifeline for many workers like me."

#3: Contactless Philanthropy - more people donating from safety of their homes

Touch 'n Go eWallet in Malaysia

Touch 'n Go eWallet is extending a helping hand to the underprivileged communities by providing a better solution for the rakyat to offer financial relief directly to local non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

As the nation's choice for cashless transactions, Touch 'n Go
eWallet wants to highlight the plight and need of those in its network
such as Kechara Soup Kitchen, Tzu Chi Buddhist Foundation and Generasi
Gemilang. Proceeds are channeled directly to the NGOs in Malaysia
enabling to better answer needs of the homeless, vulnerable and
low-income families in in a shorter time thereby cutting out lengthy
administrative paperwork. To date, Touch 'n Go eWallet has facilitated
donations worth more than RM280,000 to a total of 22 NGOs in Malaysia.

Kechara Soup Kitchen for example, was able to raise enough funds to provide foods and essential items to the poor families who are affected with the pandemic. Single parents, elderlies living alone, and impoverished families who have lost their source of income from the low-income urban areas to the Orang Asli community in Kampong Orang Asli Lebak, Gabong, Pasir, and Bentung areas are now receiving the help they desperately need in the form of food and health essentials to help them survive these difficult times.

At the same time, the struggling non-locals are not forgotten. Tzu-Chi Buddhist Foundation, with the aid of donors raised the needed fund to distribute food and health essentials to the underserved communities including face masks and hand sanitizers which are becoming increasing difficult to purchase.

#4: Contactless Fun - stay-home life can be awesome with entertainment accessible through e-wallets

Touch 'n Go eWallet in Malaysia

As a concerted effort to fight against COVID-19 and protect its people, Malaysia has implemented its nation-wide Movement Control Order (MCO) since 18 March 2020.

To help the locals through MCO with a smart, healthy and productive life, Touch 'n Go eWallet has introduced MCO Buddy, to crowdsource and share bite-sized lifestyle content ranging from cooking recipes, indoor fitness, personal finance to donations to keep people engaged and stay active.
Not long ago, LamboFresh, a Fresh Food product series in the local-homegrown online marketplace platform, LamboPlace.com, was created to break the traditionally long-chains of supplies and distributions that have been put in practice here in Malaysia decades ago. However times have changed, situations like these are what pushes a breakthrough from traditional practices.

The very existence of online marketplaces is to bridge the connections between traditional-run businesses with consumers of the new-era, who are strong believers of online shopping or have been recognised as a growing market segment over the years, since eCommerce made its debut. LamboFresh, on the other hand, is created to connect local farmers, distributors, suppliers and brick-and-mortar stores with the end-customers or consumers through their online marketplace with similar objectives.

What LamboPlace offers their vendors or sellers in their online platform is to handle their online orders, marketing and branding, customer care and service, all the way to fulfillment and delivery services, with their sister-company, LamboMove. Their promise is to help businesses to create better values for their brands, to be easily seen by many buyers.

LamboPlace encourages offline or traditional businesses to start digitising and jump into the e-Commerce bandwagon, not only for situations like this, but also to be ready for the future e-Commerce demands and changes in consumers' or customers' buying-behaviors.

"Many food producers are facing financial difficulties during the MCO, no less impacted are Malaysia's Seafood sellers. Seafood goes to ruin faster than most vegetables and many sellers are forced to discard their catch every day. Traditional shops that are closed are forced to reduce the options of premium products for sellers to provide consumers." said Dato' Jason, Group CEO of LamboPlace Sdn Bhd.

To help out local producers and distributors, LamboPlace have launched LamboFresh with objectives to not only assist local businesses, but also to ensure consumers don't need to change their lifestyles - they can still get trusted restaurant-quality fresh food delivered to their doorstep, hassle-free, supported by their very own last-mile delivery company, LamboMove.

LamboMove, LamboPlace's sister-company, has recently offered their delivery services to businesses ranging from startups, SMEs to large enterprises. Having held a status of reliability, LamboMove is also known for its fast delivery services, as quick as 6 hours within Klang Valley and a promise of 24 hours to 2 days maximum, beyond Kuala Lumpur.

"Delivery and logistics services play a very important role in e-Commerce businesses. That's why to LamboPlace, it's very vital when running an online business. LamboPlace's vendors or sellers enjoy fees as low as RM2.00 per delivery for most products within Klang Valley. Buyers or customers of LamboPlace have also experienced paying delivery fees as low as RM2.00 per delivery." added Dato' Jason.

The support for local businesses are very much needed from fellow Malaysians, especially during these times. LamboFresh is offering a special discount when you use promo code LAMBOFRESH upon checking out. Shop safely for safe and quality products from home.
The e-commerce platform today announced its support package to help SMEs and businesses that have been adversely impacted by the Movement Control Order (MCO).

The package addresses the struggles businesses are facing following an engagement between Shopee and retail associations, chambers of commerce as well as business owners. Two pain points that have been identified were:

SMEs are looking for new sales channels such as e-commerce but are unfamiliar with how to go about it. These SMEs want a partner that can provide them with clear step-by-step guidance and support, to ensure they succeed in their online selling journey.

A huge number of existing online sellers have been struggling with increasing costs and significant revenue loss from low sales volumes.

The Shopee Seller Support Package will aid local SMEs and businesses in various sectors including retail, fresh produce, food and beverage (F&B) and more by driving digitalization of traditional businesses and bringing them online. The Package also seeks to support all its sellers by creating sales and growth opportunities, reducing operational costs and facilitating sustainable development through funding, subsidies and education.

The last mile logistics company recently secured a tripartite partnership with 7 Eleven and Razer Merchant Services that aims to bring up an additional 149 outlets registered as Ninja Points in the first phase. Customers, retailers and logistics service providers are guaranteed to benefit from the PUDO concept as it brings more footfall to stores while unlocking additional services for customers to process their parcels and helping logistics players to achieve higher cost-efficiency with aggregated deliveries to a single strategic location.

"We are continually expanding our network and reach in order to serve more customers by partnering with strategically located retail outlets and convenience stores to become our registered Ninja Points. To date, we have over 1,000 Ninja Points for merchants to drop off and shoppers to pick up their parcels with future plans to expand in Johor Bahru and Penang by the second quarter of the year 2020. Out of those, 86 automated parcel lockers also known as Ninja Box are placed at every Rapid KL Light Rail Transit (LRT) station from Gombak to Puchong, which makes us the largest parcel locker network in the Klang Valley," said Adzim Halim, the Country Head of Ninja Van Malaysia.

The last mile logistics company recently introduced a live chat feature that provides immediate assistance for both shippers and shoppers to locate the whereabouts of their parcel in real-time. The feature is essential in providing peace of mind towards the safety and location of their parcels, directly translating to enhanced customer experience. It is imperative for the e-commerce support industries to step up and grow in tandem with the ASEAN e-commerce sector, which net worth is expected to reach US$153 billion in 2025.

With the improved operational efficiency, Ninja Van is able to scale and handle more deliveries this year. In Malaysia, it is the sole logistics player that can offer next-day delivery service with exceptional performance in major cities. To kickstart 2020, it has recently struck a partnership with e-commerce platform Shopee, who joins its portfolio of over 35,000 businesses and sellers enlisted for its logistics services. Commenting on how it will handle Shopee's multiple peak shopping season and campaigns, Adzim stated that Ninja Van will leverage on its wide coverage and state-of-the-art technology while remaining nimble during peak periods throughout the year.

Ian Ho, Regional Managing Director of Shopee, said, "The e-commerce industry in Malaysia is on an upward trajectory with a forecasted growth rate of more than 20% this year. As the number of people shopping online increases, so is their expectation for faster deliveries. To continuously offer a convenient, enjoyable and satisfying online shopping experience, we have appointed Ninja Van as our latest third-party logistics (3PL) partner in Malaysia. Moreover, its ability to ship bulky items provides greater convenience to our users when they purchase large home appliances. We successfully kick-started this partnership at our recent Chinese New Year Sale, and this initiative has been well-received by our users as orders of bulky items grew 3x compared to the same time in 2019,"

"This result is very encouraging as it proves we have made the right decision to grow this segment. With Ninja Van joining our 3PL family, we will be able to better serve our customers as we gear up for Hari Raya, whilst providing sellers with more shipping options as they, too, continue to enhance their customer experience." added Ho.

Ninja Van views this partnership as a great start to serve more Malaysians with its high-quality services. The logistics company is able to take on deliveries of up to 90kg for Shopee customers; thus, allowing for more shipment of bulky items such as washing machine, cabinets, sofa, air conditioner and kitchen appliances. This is in addition to the high shopping activities that take place on the platform during peak seasons throughout the entire year such as CNY, Raya, 9.9, 11.11 and 12.12.

E-commerce is fast becoming a daily norm in users' lives

Shopee is fast becoming the go-to online shopping platform for users in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. It is also the top-ranking app in the Shopping category by average monthly active users across Southeast Asia.

Users are also increasingly relying on Shopee to purchase their everyday products. Daily essentials such as detergent liquid, washing machine cleaner, shoe storage boxes and stationery emerged as some of the top-selling products in Malaysia on 12 December.

In addition, users are becoming more resourceful in obtaining information before making a purchase. A total of 180,000 hours were clocked across Shopee Live streams over the entire event period, as users engaged with their favourite brands and sellers in real-time to get information on the latest hot-selling products.

Across the region on 12 December:

Success of Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale signals growing trust and participation in online shopping

The success of the Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale also showcases increasing confidence in online shopping in the region. Users outside capital cities are also increasingly going online to sell or buy products they previously never had access to. This 12.12, there was an increase in orders from outside major cities across the region compared to last year. In Malaysia, various areas within Kedah, Pahang, Kelantan, Sabah and Terengganu experienced significant shopping activity. Some of the top-selling products include motorcycle oil filters, car air fresheners, and headscarves.

Ho concluded, "The Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale marks the end of an outstanding 2019. We have achieved so much in the past year but what stands out the most is the unwavering support we have received from our users, sellers, brands and partners. As we look ahead to 2020, we will continuously elevate the Shopee experience and unlock the full potential of e-commerce for all."
Bolstered by improved branding efforts, Malaysia was ranked 8th among the top performing markets, demonstrating the growing appeal of its products vis-à-vis those from other countries.

Malaysian products and brands recorded a 122% year-on-year GMV growth, on the back of increased favour for Malaysian brands and merchants among Chinese consumers. The top three most popular product categories were health supplements (such as bird's nest), instant coffee, and baby strollers, while the top three Malaysian brands were PT Swift Marketing Sdn Bhd (正典燕窝), OldTown White Coffee, and ChekHup (泽合) Coffee.

Malaysia’s relative outperformance can partly be attributed to sustained efforts by Malaysian government agencies, ministries, local merchants and Alibaba Group to increase brand awareness for Malaysian products in China. In September, Alibaba Group hosted Malaysia Week in Shanghai to broaden the reach of local products in the Chinese market. As one of Alibaba Group's many Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP) initiatives, Malaysia Week showcased over 800 products from 100 Malaysian brands to increase awareness and interest in Malaysian products on a global stage.

This year’s 11.11 also provided some insight about the Malaysian consumer by the bargains they picked up:

The most expensive item bought in Malaysia during 11.11 was an OSIM massage chair at RMB17,990 (RM10,650)

Multiple brands sold more than 3,000 robotic vacuum cleaners, making it the single most popular product category among Malaysian consumers

The best-selling beauty product was the 'Household pore-cleansing facial device', popularised in Malaysia by live-streamer Lee Jia Qi.

The top Tmall product categories in Malaysia were mum and baby, apparel for men and women, furniture, and 3C digital products.

Products from rural farmers in Malaysia also performed well during this year’s 11.11 on Lazada’s flagship platform Lazmall. The Desaku Flagship Store, which specializes in products from local farmers in Pahang, had all its listed products and bundles snapped up during the 24-hour sale, indicating a high demand by Malaysian consumers for local products, such as Orang Asli organic rice, Sempalit peanuts, Bentong soy sauce, and Bentong ginger powder. The store is the brainchild of four Malaysian entrepreneurs who, after having joined Alibaba’s Netpreneur training programme, were inspired by the success of the Taobao Village model in China, and upon their return to Malaysia decided to set up the store to provide opportunities for underserved communities through e-commerce.
4 in 5 Malaysians are influenced by online touchpoints like search engines, brand sites and ecommerce comparisons for research and information seeking before making their purchase.

"Malaysians are becoming increasingly conscious and deliberate about their smartphone choices given innovation in the smartphone industry and higher access to information. Online research is arguably the most important part of the purchase journey and where Malaysian consumers spend the most time on; but once all the factors are weighted and considered there's still room for retail sales to play a part," said Su Ann Lim, Industry Head for Tech and Telco at Google Malaysia.

Malaysians in the market for a smartphone perform many research actions before purchasing. As the research highlights, digital has now emerged as the top source of information to help buyers make their decision. Overall, an average of 8.3 activities are completed during the research phase before Malaysians go on to make the final decision.
The Shopee 11.11 Big Sale in Malaysia treated users to three weeks of unstoppable promotions and entertainment, headlined by nationwide free shipping with a minimum spend of RM11. Brands and sellers on Shopee saw a huge boost to their sales on 11 November. Top-performing brands recorded an average of 5,659 times increase in visits and 740 times growth in orders, while shopping activity peaked over lunch at 12.10PM, as the sale fell on a working weekday. Biggest gainers include Tefal, Skechers, and Acer who recorded a 3,408-time, 2,870-time, and 1,743-time uplift in orders respectively.

Newcomer on Shopee, KFC recorded finger lickin' good sales with the highest number of orders from the F&B category. The amount of KFC meals that were purchased on Shopee could feed the entire Putrajaya population. Malaysia's much-loved fast food restaurant brand was also searched for almost half a million times on Shopee on 11 November itself.

Earlier this year, Shopee saw a growing trend where users were becoming confident in purchasing big ticket items on the platform. Users' confidence is growing and more apparent this 11.11 because not only are they buying low and mid-range smartphones, but were seen to be getting latest flagship mobile phones such as the iPhone 11 Pro Max, Huawei P30, Asus ROG Phone II, Samsung Galaxy S10+, OPPO Reno 2, and Honor 20 Pro which are typically priced at RM3,000.

Shopee continued to see more male users and older users shopping on 11 November. Male users were shopping most often for mobile gadgets and tech accessories, with keywords such as power bank, speaker, earphones and iPhone being searched for over 2.9 million times in total. In addition, users aged over 50 took the opportunity to grab health-related items like the Nestle Omega Plus Milk Powder and blood pressure monitor while also getting household necessities like detergent, dishwashing liquid and mops.

Ian Ho, Regional Managing Director, Shopee said, "We have been charting a strong momentum this year-end sales season. Despite 11.11 being a global shopping festival, Shopee has been able to get this region on board and interested by successfully localising the campaign to suit our users wants and needs. In Malaysia, our efforts were backed by sellers, brands, and partners who joined us to deliver an engaging and social shopping experience. This is not merely Shopee's success but a success shared by the wider Malaysian retail industry."

This year, the e-commerce platform launched its inaugural charity campaign, #ShopeeMAKNA 11.11 Charity Challenge, together with the National Cancer Council Malaysia (MAKNA). The initiative aims to raise funds for the treatment of underprivileged cancer patients. In this first ever attempt to run a charity drive, and at this scale, Shopee is pleased to announce that it united Malaysians and its partners like Sunway Medical Centre for this cause, and together raised RM114,170 in just three weeks.

To further drive awareness, #ShopeeMAKNA 11.11 Charity Challenge culminated with a live show, aired on Shopee Live. During the show, personalities including Elyana, Farahanim Razak, Rita Dato' Sosilawati, Lia Natalia, As'ad Motawh, Yasmin Hani, Liyana Jasmay, Sarah Hildebrand, Adira Suhaimi, Fahrin Ahmad and Sophia Liana as well as national gymnasts Koi Sie Yan, Jeremiah Loo and Amy Kwan showed their support by taking part in six crazy challenges, voted by Malaysians, to raise funds.
Shopee recorded half a million views in two hours as Malaysians tuned in to support and cheer for their favourite stars. Donations kept pouring in even till past midnight. Further hyping the show, rock icon Amy Search made a surprise appearance and charmed the crowd with one of his famous numbers, Kerja Gila. It was truly a special treat as the audience got to sing with him, and also take pictures with other celebrities on stage after the show. Click here to catch a rerun of the show.
It is humbling to witness Malaysians coming together for their fellow neighbours regardless of race, creed or religion. We are heartened by the continued support from all our users and partners. As we look forward to wrapping up the year, we call on Malaysians to stay tuned and join in our upcoming birthday celebration - the Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale."

DuitNow QR is established under Bank Negara Malaysia’s Interoperable Credit Transfer Framework (ICTF). ICTF mandates that PayNet, as the country’s shared payment infrastructure provider, implement an interoperable and common QR standard for Malaysia. 4 Banks are already offering DuitNow QR in their mobile banking apps, with 25 Banks expected to implement DuitNow QR over the next 6 months.

DuitNow QR will foster an efficient, competitive and innovative payment landscape in Malaysia by enabling interoperability, promoting collaborative competition and providing fair and open access to the shared payment infrastructure. Through DuitNow QR, users can make payments from any participating Banks or e-Wallets’ mobile apps. Merchants would only need to display one QR Code, the DuitNow QR, to accept payments.

“At the moment, e-Wallet providers are incurring substantial acquiring costs for merchants since they are each signing up the same set of merchants for their respective proprietary networks. With DuitNow QR, a merchant needs to sign up with only one Bank or e-Wallet acquirer, and customers of all participating Banks and e-Wallets would be able to make DuitNow QR payments to the merchant using their respective mobile apps,” said Mr Peter Schiesser, Group Chief Executive Officer, PayNet.

Grab reimagined the future of digital payments with their vision to be the everyday e-Wallet, meeting the daily needs of users through GrabPay. Since the launch of GrabPay, new features have been introduced along with a rapidly growing partner network of both Banks and local merchants. This has significantly increased the adoption of virtual payments innovatively, which is in line with the Government’s push to move Malaysia forward in the digital economy and cultivating a cashless society. With its admission to the DuitNow QR scheme, Grab will add DuitNow QR support in the Grab app by the first half of 2020.

“We are honoured to be the first e-Wallet to adopt DuitNow QR. This partnership will propel GrabPay further to provide a seamless and safe payment method for customers and merchants. DuitNow QR’s interoperability simplifies and provides consumers with a frictionless and rewarding payment method, whilst providing our merchants a safe and cost-effective way to collect payments.

Our strategy has always been focused on being hyperlocal, and our partnership with PayNet is yet another example of being customer-centric to grow Malaysia’s cashless society as it makes it even more affordable and accessible for all Malaysians to do so,” said Ooi Huey Tyng, Managing Director of GrabPay Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

DuitNow QR is an extension of the DuitNow service launched in December 2018, which allows Bank customers to transfer money instantly and securely on a 24/7 basis at Banks’ Internet or mobile banking channels. DuitNow fund transfers can be directed using the recipients’ mobile numbers, MyKad or business registration numbers.

Following the path set by Grab, another 15 e-Wallet providers and non-bank merchant acquirers have also applied to participate in DuitNow. “Potential participants undergo a rigorous assessment and due diligence process before admission into the DuitNow scheme as we place great emphasis on the safety, security and stability of our payment eco-systems,” added Mr Schiesser.

Grab’s entry into the DuitNow eco-system coupled with the upcoming participation of all retail Banks and major e-Wallets in Malaysia will cement DuitNow QR as the QR payment solution for Malaysia, providing a convenient, cost-effective, and ubiquitous payment option for all merchants and consumers in the country.
Fast forward to today, Boost has achieved many significant milestones - from enabling users to pay for on-street and gated parking, utility bills, buy pre-paid top-ups, order food delivery and roadside assistant services, book and purchase public transport tickets, make e-donations as well as provide micro-financing and micro-insurance solutions to merchants. It has also powered 24 cashless campuses and 120 religious institutions across the country. To date, it has over 4.8 million users with the widest nationwide coverage of around 115,000 merchants.

The three new upgraded features are:

(1) BoostUP – Stepping up from the much-loved Shake Rewards, BoostUP is a rewards programme that will now allow users to enjoy more exciting rewards starting 1 November. Just by performing regular daily transactions, users can earn coins and Shake rewards. The Shake rewards are now bigger and better in which users can get extra coins, exciting prizes or Golden tickets. The more you spend with Boost, the more coins you earn which can be used to redeem prizes including premium gadgets, entertainment and gaming content, cashback, vouchers and many more from the rewards catalogue. Golden tickets earn users unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime experiences that include a Mediterranean cruise, a day out with an A-list celebrity, a romantic getaway at Pangkor Laut Resort, exclusive VIP access to movie premiers or enjoy the thrills of extreme sports overseas.

To kick off, we are giving out rewards and prizes worth RM8 million including fuel vouchers up for grabs in addition to exclusive benefits just by flashing the Boost app at selected partners in F&B, retail and airport lounges.

(2) CashUp – A savings feature curated specially for online shopaholics, there are over 100 international and local online retailers such as Shopee, Zalora, Lazada, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Klook, Sephora, JD Sports, Kinokuniya, Amazin’ Graze and counting under this rewards plan. Users can easily earn cashback of up to 13.5% from their favourite online retailers when utilizing the CashUp feature.

Users can track cashback earned through the CashUp page in the Boost app. After online merchants validate the transaction, users can transfer earnings directly into their Boost e-wallet and continue shopping. CashUp is available from the 2nd week of November onwards.

(3) UnionPay QR Payment Service – Boost users can now pay at any UnionPay QR merchants in Malaysia, giving consumers more options and accessibility to go cashless. The partnership officially kicks off in Malaysia and with this payment service, Boost will have a total of almost 125,000 merchants nationwide. Boost also has expansion plans to allow users to pay with Boost at 11 million UnionPay QR merchants across 31 countries in the near future.

This service is available 1 November onwards. Until 31 December 2019, users will be able to earn an instant RM 3 cashback upon activation of the UnionPay QR payment service in their Boost e-wallet. With a minimum spend of RM 300 at these UPI merchants – Duty Free, Dimensi Exklusif, Colours and Fragrance – within any airport in the country, users will earn an instant cashback of RM30.
